Chapter 7

The plane stopped once, in London’s Heathrow Airport, to refuel. The passenger section contained Mary, John and the rest of the council with some of their family members. It was a long trip over the Atlantic to Heathrow, but John passed the time by looking at a book on Nubia. He had called the EI office before leaving to tell him of his decision to go to work for Mary. They told him they weren’t pleased with his decision, but understood. John made a few more calls once the plane was in the air and made arrangements to have some of his personal belonging shipped from his apartment in Philadelphia to a safe location inside Kenya. He had taken off with Mary lacking a passport and wearing only the clothes he had on him and carrying the cash in his wallet.

Mary insisted he sit up front with her since he was to be placed in charge of her personal guard. Most of the words being spoken around John were Nubian and he began to work at learning the language. It wasn’t easy; Nubian was related closely to Arabic and Hebrew. This meant that it depended heavily on consonants and lacked the flow of a language loaded down with vowels. John had spent a few months learning Chinese when he was in the army, so he understood the difficulty in acquiring a new language at his age. It wasn’t impossible, but it would be very difficult. John reassured himself that he was doing it the best way, by immersion. Eventually, he would hear very little English spoken around him and would be forced to learn the new language. Mary had assured him that English was widely understood in Nubia among the educated classes and he would be provided with an interpreter.

“It’s not the educated people I’m going to be recruiting for your guard,” he told her. “You’ll be better protected by some bumpkins from the hills who are thrilled to be selected for an important job involving a gun than a bored aristocrat who thinks he’s too good to follow you around.”

“I’ll see you learn Nubian,” she told him. “But you need to remember that Nubian isn’t the only language spoken in the empire. I recall my mother telling me there are five other major languages and fifty minor ones.”

“Great,” John groaned and leaned back in his chair. “A regular babel.”

The Lear jet was headed on its way toward Kenya from London when Colonel Haile walked up to the front of the plane, where Mary and John sat, to inform them of a change in plans. He was smiling; something John hadn’t seen him do since they had met.

“Change of location, Your Highness,” he told her. “I’ve just talked to General Menlik on the ground. We took Akzum last night. Our troops are victorious and they want us to land the plane at the airport outside the city.”

“Is that safe?” John asked him. “I’ve been looking at the news reports and it seems the Junta held out in the capitol until the last minute.
